Bhagavad Gita Summary Ch 1

CHAPTER 1 ARJUNA VISHADA YOGAM

  1. Being a soft-hearted devotee, he shows compassion towards his relatives who
    are on the opposite side. He asks Krishna how can he enjoy the kingdom after killing
    his relatives.
  2. He asks, “If we kill the elders of the family, who will take care of the family
    traditions?”
  3. He talks about the Sinful reactions that will come by destruction of one’s own
    family members
    Giving these reasons, he decides not to fight and drops his bow and arrows in
    despair.
  4. Arjuna entered the Kurukshetra battlefield with utmost self-confidence. Lord Krishna, the
    creator of the universe had agreed to be his humble charioteer.
  5. Just to have a clear idea, Arjuna wanted to have a look at all those who had come to assist
    the wicked Duryodhana. So he asked Krishna to park the chariot in between the two armies.
  6. Bhagawan took the chariot and kept it as per Arjuna’s words.
  7. Arjuna was shocked to see, instead of enemies, his grandfather Bhishma and Guru
    Dronacharya as well as his own friends and relatives in both the sides.
  8. The very fact that he now has to kill all these kith and kin brought a mental distress for him.
    This unexpected revelation placed Arjuna in great confusion.
    Arjuna put forward four main arguments against fighting in the war.
  9. He cannot enjoy the kingdom after killing his close people.
  10. He asks, “If we kill the elders of the family, who will take care of the family traditions?”
  11. The family women would be polluted
  12. He talks about the Sinful reactions that he will get will permanently push him in hell.
    Giving these reasons, he decides not to fight and drops his bow and arrows in despair.
  13. Arjuna puts forward many arguments against fighting in the war.

भीष्मद्रोणप्रमुखतः सर्वेषां च महीक्षिताम् ।
उवाच पार्थ पश्यैतान्समवेतान्कुरुनिति ॥ २५ ॥

bhīṣma-droṇa-pramukhataḥ
sarveṣāṁ ca mahī-kṣitām
uvāca pārtha paśyaitān
samavetān kurūn iti

Translation: In the presence of Bhīṣma, Droṇa and all the other chieftains of the world, the Lord said, “Just behold, Pārtha, all the Kurus assembled here.”
